Once again at the Strathalbyn Easter meeting we had the fancy dress for pony and participants and everybody exceeded expectations and put such a big effort in making it very difficult for the judge Sandra Hutchinson to choose.

For easier judging they were split into two groups, girls and boys.

Also on the night a Journalist, Joe Sullivan from ABC North & West SA, Port Pirie made the trip down to do a story on Rehn Nagel and call one of the pony races.  It was a pleasure to meet him and listen to his race call.

Rehn Nagel watches over Joe Sullivan (ABC, Port Pirie) as he calls a pony race.  Rehn called the other two races.

Oh and Joe Sullivan interviewed me too (Julie Billinger)

STORIES by Rachel Maguire

This was the final meeting for this racing season. Jodie Billinger and Kathryn Lehmann were driving for the last time tonight and would like to wish them both all the best in their harness racing future.

Race: 1 – Quest Serviced Apartments, Mawson Lakes Shetland Trot

With a field of seven shetlands taking to the track for the final time this season. When the flag went  Swamp Fire skipped away but got down quickly to lead from Pee Wee 50, Eddy’s A Fake, Midnight Star, Ben Ten, Crackerjack and It’s All About Me. With metres away from the finishing post Swamp Fire was still out front and looked like the winner but the back marker Crackerjack flashed along the inside to claim first placing. The final placing were Crackerjack 1st, Swamp Fire 2nd and Ben Ten 3rd.

Race: 2 – Simon and Danielle @ Quest, Mawson Lakes Trot

The next race had a small field of five ponies taking to the track. All ponies trotted away nicely with Born To Be Wild the leader from Cowboy Road, Aadelaidee Lady, Summer Surprise and Chilli Knights.

Heading into the bend Cowboy Road took over the lead from Born To Be Wild, with Chilli Knights making up ground from the back mark.

Cowboy Road lead until half way up straight where Chilli Knights raced away to be an easy winner from Aadelaidee Lady and not far away in third was Cowboy Road.

Race: 3 – Strathalbyn Harness Racing Club Trot

The final race of the night was medium-fast class, with six ponies facing the starter. When the flag went down all ponies stepped away with Reggie Ledgie the early leader from Aussie, Way To Go, Mr Mischief, Lapanacaton and Wynkie Sweet Fairytales.

Reggie Ledgie was still the leader heading into the straight, with Mr Mischief trotting nicely out after him and Lapanacaton running into third from the back mark.

Down the straight Mr Mischief went to the front and never looked back, making this back to back wins from the previous night, second was Lapanacaton and third was Wynkie Sweet Fairytales.
